about

I Make the Coffee

This is a snappy, fun song. Not autobiographical at all. I am the one at our house that doesn’t pick up after myself. I don’t drink coffee and have never made it. It is a catchy song a lot of people can relate to and of course is very popular with the ladies. There is a great side story to this song. When we recorded it, the drummer Jon Peckman commented that this song was “a little too close to the bone” and that his wife would probably love it. Later when Jon was adding more percussion on the track he announced into the mic, “Julie, I cannot listen to these scathing lyrics one more time.”
Musically, we did a lot with this song. Dave Williard’s keyboard powers the groove. The song was originally supposed to fade out, but as I discovered on a fade out, the band just plays for a really long time and then later the engineer fades it out. As you can hear, after the last verse ends, the band just lets loose. In the final mix I decided not to fade out the ending and leave in the jamming. If it sounds like we were having fun it’s true, we were. Even Jon started having fun once those darn lyrics ended.

lyrics

I Make the Coffee

1)You say we’re partners that much is true,
You say we’re partners, but what do you do? What do you do?

Chorus: I make the coffee,
I sweep the floor,
I don’t want to fight, but it’s not right,
You know it’s not right.

2) I know you work hard, but so do I,
You see the shoes on the floor, but you walk on by, you walk on by.

Chorus: I make the coffee,
I sweep the floor,
I don’t want to fight, but it’s not right,
You know it’s not right.

3) Where do clean clothes come from? Maybe heaven above
Food appears in our fridge, must be from love, we’ve got a lot of love.

Bridge:
You are a good man, but we need to chat,
I thought you’d figure it out, what if you, what if you, what if you have?

4) So here’s your notice, the cleaning service has stopped,
The cook is tired, its time to step up, its time to step up.

Chorus: I make the coffee,
I sweep the floor,
I don’t want to fight, but it’s not right,
You know it’s not right.

Julie Clark Shubert South Carolina

If you listened to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and every rocking song you could get your hands on from 1966 to now and stirred it up with a Fender Strat and sang it from a woman's perspective, you would have Julie Clark Shubert "From the Inside Out." When Julie turned 50, her husband gave her a Fender Strat, the stars aligned and her natural gift appeared, the rest is kinda a blur. ... more
