I Need You More Than Ever

I had entitled this song, “We Can Do Better.” Ed really loved the song, but he recommended that I change the title. “No man wants to hear, we can do better, because he hears, you can do better, but how great is it to hear I need you more than ever? Then you have our attention and we can work on whatever we need to as a couple.” Ed did make a compelling argument, so I changed the title.
I really wanted the vocals be a duet with a man because the song is about a couple and how they negotiate that treacherous path we call marriage. Really only Father in Heaven is optimistic enough to think that men and women could actually live together without killing each other. I was searching for someone to sing it with me and one Sunday in church I heard this great tenor voice behind me and it sounded good with the alto part I was singing. I asked Shawn Anderson to sing the song with me and he agreed, but then his life got really crazy. He and his wife had a baby, and then they took a new job and were getting ready to move. We had one window of opportunity so I had Shawn over to the house to figure out the harmony part he would sing. I sang a sample harmony part along with the melody already recorded, but instead of singing it with me he sang a harmony with my harmony. Incredibly it worked out, although harmony is typically lower than the melody, it’s hard to sing lower than my tenor voice unless you sing bass. It turned out to be a very beautiful song and between Shawn’s tender vocals and Ed’s romantic solo, it turned out to be the make out song on the CD.
